Canadian Hall of Fame trainer Carl Jamieson celebrated a significant achievement during the opening week of the Grand Circuit meet at The Red Mile in Lexington, Kentucky.
Two-year-old pacing filly Cheekie and driver Mark MacDonald edged out Better Said for a 1:53 maiden-breaking victory in a late-closing series to give Jamieson his 1,000th career win on Thursday night. Jamieson also co-owns the Rocknroll Hanover-Thong filly with George Harrison, Murray Cox and Sharon Roden Cox.
Back at home about an hour earlier, the Rockwood, Ont. resident also won an Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Series event at Mohawk Racetrack with two-year-old trotting filly Danielle Hall and son Jody helping him close in on the milestone.
Jamieson was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2013. The respected horseman has collected multiple O'Brien Award trophies for his horses and was awarded the O’Brien Award of Horsemanship himself in 2006.
Jamieson has had tremendous success developing young horses throughout his career and competing in the Ontario Sires Stakes. Some of his recent career highlights include winning the 2011 Pepsi North America Cup with Up The Credit, the 2007 Breeders Crown and Governors Cup with Santanna Blue Chip, the 2006 Shes A Great Lady with Appleoosa Hanover and 2006 Gold Cup & Saucer with Banner Yankee.
The Nova Scotia native is also known for campaigning one of the sport's fastest pacers, Warrawee Needy, who equalled the 1:46.4 all-age world record in 2013's William Haughton Memorial eliminations at The Meadowlands.
Overall, his stable has amassed over $24.4 million in purse earnings.
