It has been reported that former Freehold Raceway President and General Manager Donald R. Codey Jr. has plead guilty to one count of stealing vouchers and two counts of issuing bad cheques this morning in Monmouth County

Superior Court.

An article on nj.com states attorney general's office today announced that the 65-year-old Donald, the brother of former New Jersey Governor Richard Codey, allowed two men to cash $1.3 million in cheques he knew would bounce and stole promotional vouchers to gamble with himself.

The report explains that Donald abruptly resigned from his position in February of last year after an in-house investigation by the track’s parent company uncovered the voucher theft and bad cheques.

“Mr. Codey stole promotional vouchers with a cash value of over $3,000,” Criminal Justice Director Stephen J. Taylor was quoted as saying in the article. “With that theft and his complicity in cashing over $1 million in bad cheques, he completely betrayed the trust placed in him as president and general manager of the raceway."

The article quoted former governor Codey as saying that he was “deeply disappointed with the very poor judgment shown by my brother,” and that “regardless, he is my brother, and I love him. I pray that he is able to move on with his life, and I am glad that he accepts full responsibility for his actions."
