Essex County Warden Tom Bain, who is also the Mayor of Lakeshore and a part of the Lakeshore Horse Raceway Group, has stated that additional June race dates for the Leamington Fairgrounds are not in the cards.
Bain's comments come on the heels of the Leamington Agricultural Society's announcement that the condition sheet for the Leamington Fair's June 14 card is online. The entry box for the program will close on Saturday, June 8 at 3:00 p.m.
The Lakeshore group has applied to the Ontario Racing Commission for 10 additional live race dates at Leamington this year. The request is a key part of the Lakeshore group's proposal that would see a not-for-profit harness racetrack erected in Lakeshore. The group was hoping to have the first of the additional 10 race dates secured for a June 21 card of racing.
According to comments Bain has made to the CBC, additional June race dates for Leamington will not become reality.
"Really, it's kind of a setback that I'm not really pleased with," Bain told the CBC. "There's no way that we could be up and running on the 21st, which we had hoped to have as our official kickoff for the Lakeshore horse racing group."
Those interested in entering their horses for Leamington's June 14 card, which is part of the 165 Leamington Fair, can access the condition sheet by clicking here. Horsepeople are encouraged to call 519-326-8082 to enter.
