SC Rewind: Picture Parade

SC Rewind: Picture Parade
Published: February 28, 2026 10:50 am EST

In this week's Rewind, Robert Smith has a group of pictures related to two different subjects as this month's version of Picture Parade. Earlier this month, two special days were observed and the pictures he has chosen relate to either Valentine's Day (Feb. 14) or Family Day (Feb. 16). The reading audience is asked to identify as many people as you can, or at least provide a last name for the folks in each photo, all of which relate to people or families involved in the sport.

Picture Parade

#1 – Can you identify the very young couple as they appeared in this 1977 photo? There is also another familiar face, the gentleman just in the background. Who are these folks?

Picture Parade

#2 – Can you identify the family members in this photo? A lovely group indeed. A last name will suffice. This photo is from the '50s.

Picture Parade

#3 – Can you identify the couple in this photo?

Picture Parade

#4 – Can you identify the family in this photo?

Picture Parade

#5 – Can you identify the couple in this older photo? They were involved in many endeavours down through the years.

Picture Parade

#6 – Can you identify the Ontario family in this photo? This was taken in the 1960s and the gentleman on the far right passed away a number of years ago.

Picture Parade

#7 – Can you identify the couple in this 1980s photo? I believe this one was taken in 1983 and these two had quite a bit to make them smile.

Picture Parade

#8 – Can you identify the family in this photo? The man doing the presenting (second from right) is not part of the family. It's Mom and her three sons whom we're looking to identify.

Picture Parade

#9 – Can you identify the couple in this photo? At one time, both of them were drivers and also involved in other equine services.

Picture Parade

#10 – Can you identify the family in this very old photo? They are from the U.S. (Michigan) and did not race much, or at all, in Canada. This could be a tough one, so I'll give a few clues and hints. That is a father, mother and four sons, and everyone was involved in the sport in some way. If you look real close, "Dad" has the letter "N" on his cuff. That might be a bit of a help.

Good luck — and it looks like quite a few smiles (intended as a cryptic clue).

(The correct answers to the above photos will be posted here by Robert as a comment in a few days.)

BLAST FROM THE PAST

Blast from the Past

Last week we had harness racing on the Rideau Canal. This week it's hockey, 1901 style.

OLYMPIC HOCKEY MEMORY

Winnipeg Falcons

Pictured above is Canada's first entrant and eventual winner of the gold medal in Olympic hockey in 1920. The team that represented Canada was the Winnipeg Falcons. Ice hockey was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1920 at the Summer Games in Antwerp.

Among all the celebrities in this week's Rewind are a couple that truly epitomize the sport of harness horse racing . In Photo Number Nine we have Marsha and Sandy Best who raced primarily in Sudbury . This remarkable couple are the ' heart and soul ' of harness racing . They never raced for big money , never had champion horses or found fame or glory but they gave the sport everything they had . As my friend Garth Gordon ( no one knows the history of harness racing like Garth ) said both Marsha and Sandy trained and drove and I might add they carried the flag for the ' little people ' in our sport . They worked very hard , somehow made a living , raised a family and had a million laughs ( as Sandy would say , but without the money .....Sandy is noted for having a great sense of humour ) . They now live on Manitoulin Island in Northern Ontario . Marsha and Sandy are the BEST !

Number 5 is Fredrick Vanlennep and his wife Frances Dodge Vanlennep. They owned Castleton Farms in Kentucky and Wolverine Raceway in Michigan. Frances was a Dodge; her family owned the Dodge Motor Company. She was a remarkable woman. She rode Greyhound to a world trotting record under saddle in 1940, 2:01 3/4. I read that Christmas time she would buy all the employees children a Christmas gift and wrap them herself. Then have everyone over for Christmas dinner and hand the presents out herself. She was the lady that built Pompano Park Raceway in 1964. If you were ever there you would have noticed all the Pink Paint on the buildings. Frances died at a young age of 56 years old. On a lesser note I bought my first car in 1963. It was a “Dodge “.

Number 7 is Joanne and Hall Of Fame Horseman Stew Firlotte the trainer of vfive Breeders Crown winners. I thought Stew won five Breeders Crowns but I wasn’t 100 percent sure so I phoned a long time employee of Stew's and a Friend of mine James “Friday“ Dean and he said yes. Town Pro won it at 2 and 3 Digger Almahurst at 2 His Magisty at 2 and Headline Hanover at 3. Ralph Hanover was a triple crown winner in 1983 the year before the Breeders Crown started or he probably would have had another one. There are not too many Canadian horse trainers did what Stewart Firlotte did.

Number 9 is Marsha and Sandy Best from Sudbury. Marsha and Sandy both trained and drove horses. Later in Sandy invented the Best Bandages and sold them all over the country.
