In this week's Rewind Robert Smith offers another edition of 'Picture Parade' with the heading When They Were Young. He has assembled a group of pictures for the reading audience to attempt to identify.

The now familiar 'Picture Parade' format is front and centre for this week's column. An array of old photographs are displayed that show a wide range of well known personalities but all were taken very early in each of their careers. Some are unmistakable despite their youthful faces, while hopefully a few others might require some further inspection and "head scratching" to put a name on them. One of them is an exceptional photograph of one of our sport's most prominent families and also a very large one.

Just jot down the number and join in on the fun if you wish. Try one or try them all.

# 1 - This once young fellow got to sit behind a few of the great ones but long after this was taken. Who is he?

# 2 - Still with us but perhaps changed a bit in looks. Name him if you can.

# 3 - This good looking young gentleman is now a slightly older gentleman, still good looking. Who do you think he is?

# 4 - This photo was taken at least 60 years ago. Who do you think he is? To my knowledge he is still with us. (Hoof Beats)

# 5 - This man was not a kid when this was taken but he did change in looks a bit as many remember him later in his HOF career. Who do you think he is? (Harness Horse photo)

# 6 - This lad was very young when this was taken (check out the soft hat) and he went on to a lengthy stellar career before leaving us several years ago. Got any guesses?

# 7 - The person we are trying to identify here is standing beside his young son who is on horseback. A real favourite at any age. Who do you say he is ? Hint I hope he gets to see this. (Montreal Gazette)

# 8 - These "boys" were pretty young here. Can you name them all plus their mentor?

# 9 - This fellow was a long time trainer and driver, well known at several Canadian tracks. This picture goes back at least 60 years and I believe he passed away a few years ago. Can you correctly identify him? (Montreal Gazette)

# 10 - Here is a real "tester". With just 11 people in the photo you should have some fun with putting names on some pretty young faces. I happen to really love this picture and am pleased to have it as part of this week's Rewind. A couple of thoughtful fellows made it possible by sending it to me.

Quote For The Week: "Life is full of unexpected things. Embrace them!"

Be sure and stay tuned during the upcoming week to find out all of the correct answers to this week's pictures.

Mystery Lad?

Can you figure out who this young fellow is? Maybe he hasn't changed in the last 35 or 40 years.

The Mystery Lad wasn't a mystery at all, he was Gord Waples

Closing note - Thanks to those who responded and in particular to Don Gillis. During our conversation he told me that he is a part of some important Ontario racing history as he drove in the very first race ever held at Mohawk in 1963. He did not win it, as that honour went to Pat Crowe.

February 22, 2021 - 12:35 pmIt seems that #9 has been a

It seems that #9 has been a bit of a mystery this week. I found out first hand who that gentleman is and despite what I wrote he is very much alive. I can attest to that as I had a lengthy and interesting phone conversation with him.  That man now a mere 84 years of age is Don Gillis and he is pictured with his prize mare Blue Angel at either Richelieu or Blue Bonnets. Originally from P.E.I he raced horses for many years on both sides of the border, spending quite a bit of time at Monticello. I apologized to Mr. and Mrs. Gillis for the error on my part which I based on information found on the Internet. It seems that another Don Gillis from the Maritimes who raced horses left us a few years ago. My thanks to Bill O'Donnell for his assistance as an intermediary.
