SC Rewind: Picture Parade

For this week's Rewind, Robert Smith offers readers the monthly edition of Picture Parade. He has assembled a collage of old photos for your viewing pleasure, and if you are so inclined, you may wish to send in a guess or two.

This week's grouping is titled "From the Scrapbook." The photos don’t follow a central theme, but are random shots taken at various locations, times, and featuring different subjects. Each old photo carries a short description intended to assist viewers in coming up with an answer. Good luck with your choices!

#1 – This photo was taken at Windsor Raceway back in 1976. It was a retirement race made up of 14-year-old horses who were ending their racing careers. The driver in this photo is now an octogenarian (meaning he’s celebrated his 80th birthday). He is still training and racing horses — now in the U.S. Who is he? The man in the leather coat, second from left, should be identifiable too.

#2 – Here we have five people and a horse. Your job is to identify the driver on the far right and the owner who is holding the winner’s award. The presenter is Bill Stephenson from radio station CFRB. I do have a name for the groom, who is partially hidden. The other man on the far left is unidentified. Try your luck.

#3 – Can you identify this fellow who is "doing his vacuuming"? Let us know who you think it is. He practiced his skills for many years, mainly at Ontario tracks. He passed away fairly recently, in October of 2024.

#4 – Who is this young fellow? It looks like he’s taken a little time off from his regular duties to perhaps take in a race or two.

#5 – This fellow left us earlier this year. Can you identify him? He is part of a rather well-known family. “Well-known” might be a bit understated.

#6 – The main question here is, what pre-race activity is taking place in this old 1969 photo? If you can name any of the people then let's hear your answers. One clue: The gentleman sort of in the centre rear, fourth from the left nearest the wall has a very interesting first name.

#7 – Looks like Greenwood in the background. Can you name this fellow driving No. 2, who was no stranger to winning races?

#8 – This one is from London, and the year is 1966. If you can name him, you’ve solved this one. At this time, drivers were not yet wearing white trousers, as you can see.

#9 – Who is this man? I once heard that he trained horses in the morning, did horseshoeing in the afternoon, and then drove horses in the evening. He must have been a busy fellow.

#10 – This gentleman was often referred to by the nickname “Gentleman.” He passed away a little over ten years ago. From what I’ve heard, he was just that. Who is he?
