SC Rewind: Picture Parade

SC Rewind: Picture Parade

For this week's Rewind, Robert Smith offers readers the monthly edition of Picture Parade. He has assembled a collage of old photos for your viewing pleasure, and if you are so inclined, you may wish to send in a guess or two.

This week's grouping is titled "From the Scrapbook." The photos don’t follow a central theme, but are random shots taken at various locations, times, and featuring different subjects. Each old photo carries a short description intended to assist viewers in coming up with an answer. Good luck with your choices!

Picture Parade

#1 – This photo was taken at Windsor Raceway back in 1976. It was a retirement race made up of 14-year-old horses who were ending their racing careers. The driver in this photo is now an octogenarian (meaning he’s celebrated his 80th birthday). He is still training and racing horses — now in the U.S. Who is he? The man in the leather coat, second from left, should be identifiable too.

Picture Parade

#2 – Here we have five people and a horse. Your job is to identify the driver on the far right and the owner who is holding the winner’s award. The presenter is Bill Stephenson from radio station CFRB. I do have a name for the groom, who is partially hidden. The other man on the far left is unidentified. Try your luck.

Picture Parade

#3 – Can you identify this fellow who is "doing his vacuuming"? Let us know who you think it is. He practiced his skills for many years, mainly at Ontario tracks. He passed away fairly recently, in October of 2024.

Picture Parade

#4 – Who is this young fellow? It looks like he’s taken a little time off from his regular duties to perhaps take in a race or two.

Picture Parade

#5 – This fellow left us earlier this year. Can you identify him? He is part of a rather well-known family. “Well-known” might be a bit understated.

Picture Parade

#6 – The main question here is, what pre-race activity is taking place in this old 1969 photo? If you can name any of the people then let's hear your answers. One clue: The gentleman sort of in the centre rear, fourth from the left nearest the wall has a very interesting first name.

Picture Parade

#7 – Looks like Greenwood in the background. Can you name this fellow driving No. 2, who was no stranger to winning races?

Picture Parade

#8 – This one is from London, and the year is 1966. If you can name him, you’ve solved this one. At this time, drivers were not yet wearing white trousers, as you can see.

Picture Parade

#9 – Who is this man? I once heard that he trained horses in the morning, did horseshoeing in the afternoon, and then drove horses in the evening. He must have been a busy fellow.

Picture Parade

#10 – This gentleman was often referred to by the nickname “Gentleman.” He passed away a little over ten years ago. From what I’ve heard, he was just that. Who is he?

HAMBLETONIAN TRIVIA QUIZ
With Hambletonian Day coming up shortly (the 100th renewal, no less), here’s a related question:

Who was the first European-born driver to win the Hambletonian? Let us know who you think it is.

(The correct answers will be posted here by Robert as a comment in a few days.)

Comments

Our experts were accurate with this week's Picture Parade photos as per usual. The correct answers are shown below:

#1 - The driver was Wayne Oke originally from Port Perry, Ont. The horse was 14 year old Luna's Bullet. The presenter at far left was Tom Lachine of Windsor Raceway. Owners Mr. and Mrs. Warren MacMillan. Garth got it! Wayne has been in the news lately as he is racing in Kentucky; no longer driving but training successfully.
#2 - The presenter is Bill Stephenson from radio station CFRB. On the far right is driver Keith Waples, with owner Ray Hobin holding the trophy won by Tarbesto Hanover. The groom partially obscured was Lucy Brooks I'm told.
#3 - That was Lenard "Babe" Campbell, late of Belmont, Ont. Thanks to his daughter in law Brenda for being in touch.
#4 - Trainer Fred Hoffman
#5 - Rheo Filion, of the famous Filion clan of Angers, Quebec, who recently passed .
#6 - I'll repeat Mr. McCabe's comment (Thanks Jerry). Charlottetown Driving Park race draw. From left: Ida Sudsbury (Clerk of the Course for over 50 years at CDP), Francis McIsaac, Associate Judge Reg Arsenault, E. Frank "Duck" Acorn (Race Secretary and part-owner of track), Aubrey Darrach and Joe Hennessey. Reg is the only one still with us.
#7 - Ross "Cowboy " Curran leads the way.
#8 - That winning driver is Don Corbett.
#9 - Percy Robillard in the sulky seat.
#10 - "Gentleman" Jim Doherty the pride and joy of Saint John, N.B.

Hambletonian Trivia - This one was a bit tricky. In 1930, the winning driver of that year's Hambo was Tom Berry who was born in England.
Thanks folks.
