Canadian Handle Surges Past 2010 Totals

As the 2011 harness racing season heads into the final week, the total handle on Canadian racing, year-to-date, continues to surge. The bet per race is now 8.82% over 2010, while the overall handle has surpassed last year's level, despite having fewer races contested

in 2011.

According to SC data, the total amount wagered on Canadian harness racing year to date is at $429.1 million, up 0.17 percent (or $700,000) from the 2010 total of $428.4 million.

Until the end of the month, SC will offer daily picks and free past performance programs for all Canadian tracks. Our goal is to help stimulate wagering and bolster the handle on the Canadian product.

For the final two weeks of 2011, Standardbred Canada is encouraging the industry, its fans and horseplayers, when given the choice, to "Bet Canadian." Visit the Bet Canadian page for daily picks and past performance programs.

For the boxing day cards of racing, why are all the Ontario tracks starting around 1:00? Why not spread the cards throughout the day? Spreading them throughout the day would surely have increased the handle at each track!

Anyways, here is a great opportunity for the patrons to take advantage of the 15% take-out on the WPS pools at Fraser....give it a try, here is an example of the difference it makes: let's say $50,000 is wagered in those pools on the 12 races, $42,500 goes back to the bettors. If that same amount ($50,000) is wagered at Rideau, Woodbine or Flamboro, only $37,500 is returned to the bettors.....that is $5,000 more in our pockets, and for a single card of racing.

Multiply this amount by the number of race cards throughout the year and.......well ...you do the math.
