Bet Canadian

Despite external pressures, and significantly fewer race days, there is a real possibility that wagering on Canadian racing can hit or exceed its 2010 total. Standardbred Canada is encouraging the industry and its fans to help make it happen with our 'Bet Canadian' campaign.

The bet per race is now 8.92% over 2010, while the overall handle has surpassed last year's level, despite having fewer races contested in 2011. According to SC data, the total amount wagered on Canadian harness racing year to date is at $437.9 million, up 0.54 percent (or $2.1 million) from the 2010 total of $435.8 million. Until the end of the month, SC will offer daily picks and free past performance programs for all Canadian tracks. Our goal is to help stimulate wagering and bolster the handle on the Canadian product.

For the final two weeks of 2011, we're asking horseplayers and fans, when given the choice, to: "Bet Canadian."

Picks, Programs For Saturday, December 31

Red Shores at Charlottetown Driving Park - Post Time 6:00 p.m. (ET) (program pages)
Longshot: Race 3, #1 T T Dawn (10-1)
Tried to do all the work in this class last time out, was a bit short after a three week rest. Could steal this one if the race goes her way.
Result: #1 T T Dawn (at odds of 5.90 to 1) was fourth-placed third, paying $5.00 to show.
Best Bet: Race 7, #3 Whitesand Artist (5-2)
This one's got the class drop, inside post and gate speed all in her favour. Everything Zen's trailing post should give Whitesand Artist the edge here.
Result: #3 Whitesand Artist was scratched - vet (sick).
Flamboro Downs - Post Time 6:00 p.m. (program pages)
Best BetRace 10, #6 Ceasar At Dawn (9/2)
This guy has two wins and two seconds in his last four starts but you'll still get a fair price as he moves up, draws only PP # 6, and gets a new pilot. One of those close second-place finishes however was a narrow defeat in the straight maiden class at Georgian so he should be able to handle this $9,000 claimer for n/w 3 lifetime.
Result: #6 Ceasar At Dawn (at odds of 3.95 to 1) finished eighth.
LongshotRace 9, #1 Wicked Fast (4/1)
Maybe not a true longshot but they ignore her in the program journal so maybe we'll get a fair price. She had a five week break this fall and was a solid third from PP # 7 in her first start back last week. She's had a lot of good results this past year racing on the lead or in the pocket and that's where she should be tonight.
Result: #1 Wicked Fast (at odds of 1.15 to 1) finished fifth.
Georgian Downs - Post Time 7:25 p.m. (program pages)

Best BetRace 7, #1 Abstract Artist (3/1)
After back-to-back open length victories at Kawartha he came here to try the Camerons Series where his opponents were a little tougher and his racing luck a little worse. Now he draws the rail back in at the n/w 2 level where, although there is some good competition, I think he and Tony Kerwood should be able to get the job done.
Result: #1 Abstract Artist (at odds of 1.25 to 1) finished first, paying $4.50, $2.70, $2.40.
LongshotRace 9, #4 Barks Like A Dog (8/1)
This is a field with a lot of possible winners so the price on her should be at least the 8/1 you see in the morning line. This multiple NYSS winner from 2009/10 had been racing against better than these at Chester and Pocono before coming north. She qualified well here behind two legitimate WEG competitors and then got absolutely scorched when they tried to roll her from PP # 10 in her first Canadian try... she'll be tight now! Moves to the 'B' circuit, draws well, and looks as good as anything in here.
Result: #4 Barks Like A Dog (at odds of 3.35 to 1) finished second, paying $4.10, $2.80.
Northlands Park - Post Time 8:00 p.m. (ET) (program pages)
Longshot: Race 4, #1 Crimson Promise (10-1)
First start off the layoff on Monday, didn't back off in that final quarter. Shows room for improvement in second start here with a better post.
Result: #1 Crimson Promise (at odds of 10.20 to 1) finished third, paying $5.80 to show.
Best Bet: Race 7, #1-1A Stonebridge Lyric-Trust The Artist (3-1)
Considered Stonebridge Lyric as my longshot play in this class last week, he responded with a solid second to All Canadian Mjjz. Add stablemate Trust The Artist to today's feature and you have superb value at 3-1. Get it if you can.
Result: #1 Stonebridge Lyric (at odds of 1.75 to 1) finished second, paying $3.70, $2.40. #1A Trust The Artist finished fourth.

The Raceway at Western Fair: Post Time 7:05 p.m. (program pages)

Longshot: Race 4, #2 Breewood Gringo (6-1)
Hasn't found the winner's circle this year but perhaps he can spring the upset on New Year's eve. In his last, the month layoff and the brutal trip did him in. He should be right there, and perhaps he can take down the favourite in the stretch.
Result: #2 Breewood Gringo (at odds of 7.95 to 1) was first-placed-seventh for failing to continue to lose ground while on a break.
Best Bet: Race 10, #1 Chinnys Wings (3/1)
A couple of bad posts at Georgian have been his undoing of late, The rail advantage and the change of scenery should have him back on his game for the win.
Result: #1 Chinnys Wings (at odds of 1.90 to 1) finished second, paying $3.50, $2.90.
Rideau Carleton Raceway - Post Time 4:30 p.m. (program pages)
Best Bet: Race 2, #6 Homerun Hitter (2/1)
The move from Georgian should work for this Allard trainee. He is capable of a huge effort and you should see one from him in this spot.
Result: #6 Homerun Hitter (at odds of 0.40 to 1) finished sixth.
Longshot: Race 7, #2 Intrepidus (6/1)
Big effort in his last, this come-from-behind specialist should benefit by the inside post. He's 4 for 14 this year, his trainer Andrew Moore is a high percentage conditioner. This horse is fresh and should do very well in here.
Result: #2 Intrepidus (at odds of 6.20 to 1) finished fourth.

Windsor Raceway - Post Time 7:00 p.m. (program pages)

Best Bet: Race 3, #2 Big Strike (5-1)
A generous morning line price for a horse that's a solid top three competitor in this class week after week. Factor in his inside post and freshness, he's virtually guaranteed to have lower odds at post time.
Result: #2 Big Strike (at odds of 3.35 to 1) finished third, paying $2.90 to show.
Longshot: Race 4, #2 Riden Dirty (8-1)
After that move up in class and tough trip on Dec. 11, this pacer got a rest so he's out of the box almost three weeks. His form before that shows he can go with these and at 8-1 looks intriguing.
Result: #2 Riden Dirty (at odds of 3.50 to 1) finished seventh.

Woodbine Racetrack: Post Time 1:20 p.m. (program pages)

Best Bet
Race 7, #9 Ideal Race (3/1)

This guy is a pretty major player around the WEG circuit and he showed us last week that he's tight again. After he wins in here today he won't be racing at a level this low for a while so take advantage and cash a ticket on him now. PP # 9 is actually a good thing as it will only help us get a better price!
Result: #9 Ideal Race (at odds of 1.75 to 1) finished 10th.

Race 1, #1 Selfish Princess (12/1)
This is just a really nice mare. She took a fast mark as a three-year-old and it looked like she might prove to be something special. It's hard to say but by the limited number of starts on her card each year maybe soundness is an issue. Either way, her last two have been solid, she draws inside, and the competition today looks just average at best. Today just might be the day for this 'Princess'.
Result: #1 Selfish Princess (at odds of 3.35 to 1) finished second, paying $6.80, $4.00.

December 31, 2011 - 1:41 pmI think it's kind of comical

I think it's kind of comical that you give out a "longshot" at Charlottetown. If I bet $20 win on the "longshot", I'd probably make him 1/2 on the board.

December 20, 2011 - 11:10 pmty once again i won again.20

ty once again i won again.20 to win on jeffie t was very nice .20 to win on joachim. was very nice to. and 5 to win here and there.keep up the great winners. rob/.

December 18, 2011 - 11:44 amI like how this concept gets

I like how this concept gets people to consider the economic impact of their wagering dollars on Canadian harness racing in general & specific tracks too. Last night I found myself alternating between Woodbine & Western Fair instead of Woodbine & a big US track, mainly because this promotion made me more tuned in to how I can make my betting money work not only for me, but for helping Canadian racing, esp. the smaller handle tracks.

I'd love to see a "bet-mob" organized online sometime, where a particular track that could use a financial boost suddenly gets tons of action from online &/or live patrons. By bet-mob, I am thinking of the "flash-mob" semi-spontaneous big dance productions that are pre-arranged to take place in public, not a really long line at the windows at 1 MTP!

December 18, 2011 - 4:52 amThanks for the pick on

Thanks for the pick on Mapleton Jake at The [email protected] Fair, had $20 to win to produce a winning night. I only play WFR so that was nice, keep up the good work!

December 17, 2011 - 6:00 pmLike the concept. Think it

ron francis SAID...

Like the concept. Think it might be further developed to create a pic 3-4-5-6 format that would involve races at different Canadian tracks. The selections, thogh, as the "bet canadian" format presently exists is encouraging and can only help the domestic product.

December 16, 2011 - 11:27 pmWhoever is picking or

Whoever is picking or handicapping the BET CANADIAN scenario should perhaps try for price horses in races 1-5. Then when one comes up , say in race 3 and pays $43.60, the lucky person will keep betting and not use their own money. Up goes the handle and up goes the money bet in the year 2011. Repeat drivers come along a lot. Play them if the driver won in race 2. In race 3, play driver right back to win. I have been watching this and it happens 1-2-3 times per night. I haven't checked Friday results at WO. Am doing so now to see if any repeat drivers.

Note--in above races you can play anything in races 1-5 or 6 ,even up to the night-cap.The main thing is to use the track money, not your own.

Try it--works a lot at times. Best of luck in blowing the old mutuel record away.
