In this week's edition of Rewind Robert Smith offers up another version of the regular feature Picture Parade. He has borrowed the title used a number of years ago in a 2011 Rewind, "Ladies In Silks". This time the pictures are different but the theme is the same. He has assembled a group of pictures of female drivers from bygone years for your viewing and perhaps guessing pleasure.
Down through the years there have been a lot of great "horsewomen", if that is the correct word, who have donned their silks and helmets (and maybe even soft caps) and displayed their talents to appreciative audiences. I have assembled a few pictures saved over the years to show today. If you care to join in, the rules remain the same, you jot down your best guesses and send them along.
#1 - This U.S. driver often raced regularly at Canadian tracks and drove a lot in days gone by. She passed away in 2010 at the age of 81. Who is she? (Harness Horse photo)
#2 - One of just two group shots in today's offering, this one I believe is fairly recent. How many can you name?
#3 - This gal spent a lot of time in the winner's circle and just passed away not too long ago. Who is she?
#4 - This young lady was a familiar figure at many Canadian tracks at one time. Who is she?
#5 - This gal held some records in her day and had a long career in the sulky. Who is she? (Harness Horse photo)
#6 - This legendary lady needs little or no introduction. Who is she?
#7 - This gal won a lot of races mainly at U.S. tracks but she could win anywhere and often proved it. Who is she? (Northeast Harness News photo)
#8 - This young lady came by her talents naturally as both of her parents were very capable drivers. Can you identify these two people?
#9 - In 1985 Flamboro Downs hosted a driver's event featuring many of the best in the sport at that time. How many can you identify in this group shot?
#10 - This old photo was taken at a small town fair race day (in Ontario) about 40 years ago. Can you name either of these two folks, especially the driver? (Elgin County archives)
Quote For The Week: "Not everything needs to be a money-making operation. You do things sometimes because it makes you feel good." - Judy Sheindlin (aka Judge Judy)
Bonus Picture
This gal was "perfect" as a driver (No. 7 horse) but did not drive too much, instead preferring to be a trainer. Who is she? For a little added question, who is that fellow having to settle for second place?
Female Driver Trivia Question
The fabled Hambletonian has been around for a very long time. First held in 1926, and won by a Canadian driver, it will reach its 100th anniversary before too many years go by.
The question apropos to today's subject is as follows. Has a female ever competed in the Hambletonian as a driver? If yes, who was the person or persons?
