Congratulations to Frankie Lund of Charlottetown, PEI, on winning our Zoom Challenge for July!

This past month’s Challenge, titled “It’s Post Time,” asked our Fan Club members to submit photos that feature racing action -- a horse warming up, racing, or in the winner’s circle that capture the anticipation and the excitement of a horse race.

Frankie’s shot was an image of the horses behind the starting gate in the sideview mirror of the starting gate car at Pinette Raceway, one of Prince Edward Island’s picturesque matinee racetracks.

Frankie got into harness racing after she had a summer job that was based at the track. “I just never left," she laughs. Leith Carr, Buddy Sheppard, Buddy Campbell, Walter Craig and Ike Morrside introduced her to the world of harness racing. She took her early lessons on how to jog and care for horses from Paul MacDonald and then worked for James (Roach) MacGregor at Glengyle Farms.

Frankie also worked at Woodmere Farms, helping to prep the yearlings for the sale and says some of her best times working with the horses were at Woodmere.

Now, she takes pictures of the horses. Her goal is to take the shot that "makes people smile" and horsepeople know those moments. “You know the mud, you know the win and you know that feeling when you just get beat!”

Thank you to our other finalists:

  • Leanne Silverthorne of Stoney Creek, Ontario, for her shot of Gammys Girl at Clinton Raceway

  • Chelsea Chase of De Winton, Alberta for her shot of Timberline Court & Gerry Hudon leaving off the gate on a dusty track at Alberta Downs, Lacombe, Alberta.

  • Trish Dooling of Paradise, Newfoundland, NF for her shot of racing action at St. John’s Racing and Entertainment Centre in Goulds, NF

  • Lori Martin of Hanover, Ontario for her shot of the Racing Under Saddle field behind the gate at Clinton Raceway on July 13, 2014

  • Davandra Cribbie of Port Hope, Ontario, for her shot of the first race of the opening night at Kawartha Downs on June 22, 2014.

HORSE CRAZY KIDS – GET SNAPPIN!

Our August Zoom Challenge theme is Horse Crazy Kids. We want to see your images of horses and kids interacting. Each month we usually receive numerous submissions that have kids in them so we thought we’d devote an entire month to them.

You can use your camera or your smartphone but remember that photos should be a minimum of 72 dpi.

Photos are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 29. A committee will select a handful of the best entries which will be included in a poll on SC’s website. Readers will then have the chance to vote for the photo they like the best. We’ll also post some of our favourite entries on our Pinterest page. Email your photos to [email protected].

Our August winner will receive a great Fan Club Swag Prize package ($50 value) and the six monthly winners will be eligible to win a grand prize which will include a $50 gift card to the racetrack of their choice and an enlargement of their winning photo framed or plaque mounted.
