Striking Sahbra, one of harness racing's leading trotting sires, died this morning, May 25, at Westwind Farm, Strathroy, Ontario, of a ruptured aorta
. He was 22, and had just been collected when he collapsed and died within minutes.
The announcement was made by Alan J. Leavitt, president of Walnut Hall Ltd. under whose management Striking Sahbra stood at Westwind Farm.
On the track, Striking Sahbra amassed 15 wins in 31 starts - including a sparking 10-for-11 record at two - and earned more than $217,000. After finding tremendous success as a stallion stateside, Walnut Hall moved the son of Supergill to Ontario. There, Striking Sahbra flourished and sired the likes of O'Brien Award winners Pure Ivory and Was It A Dream. At the time of his death, Striking Sahbra had sired 839 starters combining for purse earnings of more than $59 million.
