The very successful and widely acclaimed youth camps, presented by the Ontario Harness Horse Association, are currently looking to build and develop a new team

.

The youth camp trio (coordinator, instructor and caretaker) travels across Ontario, making scheduled stops at racetracks during the summer months, educating kids between the ages of 10-13 about horses and the harness racing industry in an interactive three to four-day program.

The positions of the Youth Camp Coordinator, Instructor and Caretaker require independent self starters that know the ins and outs of the harness racing industry, and can work cooperatively with staff, track personnel, horsepeople, students and their families. Both positions will report to the Youth Camp Committee through the Special Events Coordinator at OHHA. These are contract positions for the period of May to October with the expectation of implementing 10 camps and attending other racetrack events.

The Youth Camp Coordinator position requires:

  • ‘A’ trainers license
  • ‘A’ license to drive truck and trailer
  • Police background check
  • CPR certificate
  • Considerable experience in the harness horse industry
  • 'Hands-on' knowledge of care and training of harness horses, including horse health and safety, training, equipment, jogging and racing
  • Horsemanship, essential both for care of the four camp horses, and for teaching others
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. Adept in coordinating volunteers, conducting media interviews and speaking publicly
  • The ability to liaise with track personnel to implement Youth Camps, Adult Camps as well as other programs
  • Willingness, flexibility and freedom to travel extensively throughout summer months and to work as a member of a three-person team on a daily basis
  • Experience with computers and digital photography are definite assets
  • Position pays $ 1,500 per camp

The Youth Camp Instructor position requires:

  • Ability to plan with the Youth Camp Coordinator, the facilitation and implementation of the camp program
  • Police background check
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to liaise with staff, campers and their families
  • Insight, empathy and understanding of 10-13 year olds, as individuals and within peer groups, yet take charge to maximize benefit to students
  • Experience with horses and harness racing, to assist campers with stable work, grooming, harnessing, bathing horses, etc.
  • Some experience presenting to youth in a classroom environment, to deliver camp curriculum
  • Supervisory skills to manage campers’ daily program and activities
  • Adeptness in organizing and preparing materials for campers at each camp
  • Position pays $700 per camp

The position of the Youth Camp Caretaker requires an independent self starter who knows the ins and outs of the harness racing industry, and can work cooperatively with staff, track personnel, horsepeople, students and their families.

The position will take direction from the youth camp coordinator and be responsible for the care of the youth camp horses at each camp.

The Youth Camp Caretaker position requires:

  • ORC license
  • Police background check
  • Must be available for the period May 15 2010 to October 1, 2010
  • Must possess good organizational skills
  • Ability to delegate responsibility
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Responsible for care and management of horses and campers
  • Youth camp groom receives $500 per camp
