Glen McDermott Passes

Published: March 15, 2014 05:14 pm EDT

Trot Insider has learned that horseman Glen McDermott has passed away after a tough battle with cancer at the age of 61.

He is survived by his loving wife, Karen McDermott; three children, Sean and Patrick McDermott and his daughter Stephanie Jamieson; and grandson Jett Jamieson.

Glen drove in races all over North America from The Meadowlands and Ocean Downs to Northlands Park in Alberta, once finishing second in the Western Canada Pacing Derby. He ended up where he started, racing on the tough south western Ontario circuit before retiring into the transportation business.

Racing may not have been his career of choice, but it was his choice at heart. And he always said he loved the "bump and grind and passion of what the business brought to him." Glen left behind knowledge and skill with what it takes to be a good horseman to his daughter Stephanie and always taught his sons you have to work hard to get what you want in this life.

Glen began with his Dad and continued in the harness business, enduring the hardships with little return. The experience was of benefit somehow because from scratch he created a market and became a highly successful and respected trucking broker. He was an expert at supervising oversize loads that might originate in Europe or Asia and needed to reach a destination in North America. Glen was a self-made guy that left us too soon.

I would like to send out my deepest condolences to the McDermott family. We were good friends through high school and our careers in the horse business over the years. Karen and kids my prayers are with you in these sad times.

Sincerely
Dave Green

Our condolences to Glen's family and friends... Glen worked with me for over 10 years in early 70s as groom and trainer/driver.. Will be sadly missed by all.
