Industry Trends Dictate Changes In Breeders Crown Program
With the February 15 payment deadline approaching for many stake events, the Breeders Crown, which is administered by the Hambletonian Society has important changes.
Due to the federal holiday on Monday, payments for all Hambletonian-Society serviced stakes must be postmarked by midnight on Tuesday, February 18, per USTA rule 12, section 4.
The $5 million Breeders Crown series will celebrate its 30-year anniversary over two nights – November 21 and November 22 at the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, NJ.
The $500,000 Breeders Crown Trot and Pace for three-year-old fillies, and a pair of $250,000 ‘Crowns’ for mare pacers and trotters will be raced on Friday night. All four $500,000 two-year-old events, the $500,000 sophomore colt pace and trot and the $400,000 Crown Pace and $500,000 Crown Trot will be raced on Saturday night.
Breeders Crown purses are derived from stallion nominations, yearling nomination fees, eligibility and sustaining payments and supplemental fees. For multiple reasons, including across-the-board reduction of stud fees, the contraction important breeding markets like Ontario and New Jersey, a restriction on four-year-olds going to stud and generally fewer mares being bred, the Breeders Crown stallion fund has dropped drastically over the past two years.
Though contributory fees from breeding farms that stand stallions with stud fees of $10,000 or more were raised for the breeding season of 2014, payment schedule and purses for some of the 12 traditional Breeders Crown divisions of age, gender and gait had to be altered as well.
The four two-year-old races will continue to race for $500,000 and will have no payment increase except in the two-year-old future eligibility fee to remain eligible to race at three, which was raised from $350 to $500 and is due March 15.
No changes were made to the three-year-old purse schedule or payment fees and no changes were made to the payment schedule for mares to remain eligible to the open mare trot and pace.
Eligible horses to the Breeders Crown open races for horses and geldings now require a $1,500 payment on April 15 in addition to the February and March 15 payments of the same amount. The starting fee was lowered to $8,000 in line with the purse.
Stallion nomination remains the key to eligibility for all Crown races, but in the rare case that horses by nominated stallions have not been kept eligible by yearling or supplemental payments along the way, those horses will now pay a supplemental fee of $500 on February 15 to access eligibility to the program. Mares can pay a $250 supplemental fee.
Lastly, the yearling nomination fee due May 15, 2014 was increased from $100 to $150.
“The Breeders Crown committee of the Hambletonian Society looked long and hard at how to make these changes equitable for breeders and owners,” said Tom Charters, the Society president.
“We are very sensitive to the cost of breeding and staking horses. The Breeders Crown 30-year brand remains one of the richest and most prestigious in harness racing and we felt it important to maintain the series in the ever-shifting landscape that is current day stakes racing. Our purses remain among the highest in all divisions, but winning a Breeders Crown is about much more than money,” continued Charters.
The Hambletonian Society services 137 stakes and complete race conditions, payment forms and much more information is available online at hambletonian.org.
For more information, call the Society offices at 609-371-2211.

Meadowlands’ February 15 Payments
Nomination payments for stakes and early closers for the 2014 season at the Meadowlands Racetrack come due on February 15.
The 38th edition of the $750,000 (estimated) Meadowlands Pace, the signature Grand Circuit stakes event at the track, offers a reduction in the nominating and sustaining payments for 2014 of nearly 20 per cent compared with the 2013 levels.
The price to nominate has been slashed in half, from $1,000 to $500. New for 2014 is a tiered declaration fee, dropping the cost of entry in the elimination races from the single declaration fee of $6,000 to $2,500 for the elimination and then $5,000 to go in the final (if eliminations are not needed, the cost to race in the final will be $7,500).
Also due are the initial installments for all Meadowlands administrated/hosted stakes including the second edition of the TVG FFA Trotting & Pacing Championship.
Forms and further details are available at the Meadowlands’ website or a call to the race office at 877-782-2537.

NJSS Payments Due February 15
The February 15 deadline for New Jersey Sire Stakes first sustaining payments is the last chance for owners of NJ-sired two-year-old and three-year-old pacers and trotters to be kept eligible to the 2014 Premier and Green Acres racing programs.
The NJSS Premier Division will be contested exclusively again at the Meadowlands Racetrack in 2014 starting in May for three-year-olds and in late June for two-year-olds. The Green Acres Division begins August 28 at Freehold Raceway.
Once again this year, the NJSS rule is that the Green Acres Program is limited to horses that have earned less than $25,000 in New Jersey Sire Stakes Premier Division earnings during the current calendar year.
The NJSS Premier Division’s first sustaining payment remains $300 for both two-year-olds and three-year-olds. The initial Green Acres Division payment remains $100 for both two and three-year-olds.
Also on February 15, a $650 supplemental 2013 yearling nomination (for foals of 2012) can be made for eligibility to the New Jersey Sire Stakes. That fee is in addition to the sustaining payments for two-year-olds also due on February 15. If the foal is produced by an out-of-state breeding, the supplemental fee is $850.
The two-year-old sustaining payment must be made in order to keep the horse eligible as a three-year-old in 2014, even if the horse does not race in 2014 as a two-year-old. Supplemental yearling nominations are also due February 15 for the NJSS-sponsored 2013 Lou Babic Open Pace ($500) and Babic Filly Pace ($400).
These payments must be in U. S. funds. No late payments will be accepted and no billing notices will be mailed. Certified mail is strongly recommended to NJSS, P.O. Box 330, Trenton, NJ 08625.
