Winbak Farm of Ontario is proud to welcome O’Brien Award Winner Jimmy Freight (p, 2, 1:52.3s; 3, 1:48.3s; 4, 1:48.1s -'19 [$1,457,405]) for the 2020 season.
“We are excited to stand the only millionaire son of Sportswriter,” said Pat Woods, Winbak Farm of Ontario manager. “Jimmy Freight dominated the Ontario Sires Stakes program before successfully racing against North America’s best open pacers.”
Jimmy Freight, the richest and fastest son of Sportswriter, has been retired after a successful racing career at ages two, three and four. His career included 21 wins, 13 seconds and nine thirds from 52 races.
"Each and every time he stepped on to the race track it was all business. His will to compete was remarkable, and his handiness and gait on all size tracks was incomparable,” said Adriano Sorella, Jimmy Freight’s owner.
As a two-year-old, Jimmy Freight won seven times from 12 starts (he finished second three times and third twice). He won two Ontario Sires Stakes Gold legs and finished second in the Ontario Sires Stakes Super Final.
As a three-year-old, Jimmy Freight won the O’Brien Award for his division. Jimmy Freight earned $834,489 after winning 11 of his 21 starts. Jimmy Freight won four Ontario Sires Stakes legs and the $225,000 Super Final. Jimmy Freight also took on North America’s best and won a division of the Somebeachsomewhere Stakes and eliminations for the Messenger (second in final) and Progress Pace (second in final). He was also second in the Milstein Memorial.
“He was a dominating force in the Ontario Sires Stakes program, and he went toe to toe with the aged pacers in the grand circuit,” said Sorella. “He is truly the best I’ve ever owned.”
Jimmy Freight showed speed on all size tracks. He lowered divisional records at Yonkers Raceway (half) and Rideau Carleton (five-eighths) to 1:50.3.
“He was a perfect horse to drive. He could race any way you wanted him to race on any size track,” said driver Louis-Philippe Roy. “That is a big asset that not every horse has.”
As a four-year-old, Jimmy Freight took on the best open horses in North America. He won the Dayton Pacing Derby and Mohawk Gold Cup. He was second in the Battle of Lake Erie, Confederation Cup final and Graduate Series leg.
“He was super consistent and always tried his best and I don’t think he ever raced bad,” said Roy. “I hope he passes along those qualities, as well as his perfect gait, to his offspring so that I get the chance to drive them in all of the biggest stakes races.”
Jimmy Freight’s fastest race time was 1:47.1.
“Every driver that has sat behind Jimmy Freight loves him and every person that watches him race appreciates his desire and competitiveness,” said driver Scott Zeron. “He has been an absolute pleasure to drive and I hope his offspring inherit his professionalism, versatility and true grit that he has had week in and week out.”
Jimmy Freight should be a great cross for Cam Fella and Matts Scooter line mares (such as Bettors Delight, Mach Three and Somebeachsomewhere). Jimmy Freight will also cross well with Shadow Play and McArdle mares.
