It has been announced that O’Brien Award winner Jimmy Freight (p,4,1:48.1s [$1,457,405]) has been retired from racing and will be standing stud in Ontario at Winbak Farm for the 2020 breeding season.
Jimmy Freight, by Sportswriter and out of the Western Ideal mare Allamerican Summer, retires with a career slate that reads 21 wins, 13 second-place finishes and nine third-place efforts from 52 races. Jimmy Freight slugged it out with the top horses in the industry over the course of his career and paced to $1,457,405 in purses. He lowered his mark to 1:48.1 this year (at age four) courtesy of a blistering, front-end effort in the $100,000 Mohawk Gold Cup at Woodbine Mohawk Park in Campbellville, Ont.
Jimmy Freight won seven of his 12 freshman starts and never finished off the board during his debut campaign. He raced to $186,552 in purses that year, won a pair of Ontario Sires Stakes Gold events, and finished second in his OSS Super Final. After having been plucked out of Iowa by owner Adriano Sorella, of Guelph, Ont., Jimmy Freight went on to race for trainers Tony Alagna and Anthony Beaton during his juvenile season.
Jimmy Freight returned at age three and proved to be one of the grittiest pacers on the continent for trainers Richard Moreau and Andrew Harris. He was ultimately voted Canada’s three-year-old pacing colt of the year for his 2018 campaign. The bay won 11 of his 21 seasonal starts, finished off the board just once and banked $834,489 in purses. Jimmy Freight was unbeaten in his five OSS starts, which included his $225,000 Super Final and a mark-lowering effort in the summer (a front-end, 1:48.3 win) at Mohawk. In addition to winning a division of the Somebeachsomewhere Stakes, Jimmy Freight finished second in the Messenger (after having won his elimination), second in the Progress Pace (after having won his elimination) and second in the Milstein Memorial. Jimmy Freight also lowered the Yonkers track record to 1:50.3 during his three-year-old campaign, and also lowered the track record at Rideau Carleton Raceway to 1:50.3.
Jimmy Freight returned for his four-year-old campaign this season and again traded blows with the top horses in the industry. Shuttling between the barns of Richard Moreau, Andrew Harris and Scott Di Domenico, Jimmy Freight won three races and finished on the board in 11 of his 19 starts. Jimmy Freight was individually clocked with a sub-1:50 mile in 11 of his 19 starts in 2019. He was also individually clocked with a sub-1:49 mile on five occasions in 2019. He was clocked with back to back sub-1:48 miles (1:47.3, 1:47.1) at the Meadowlands Racetrack in the summer of 2019 (he lost by just a head in the 1:47.3 mile). Jimmy Freight paced to $436,364 in purses in his four-year-old campaign and lowered his mark to 1:48.1 over Mohawk.
Jimmy Freight, who retires as the fastest and richest son of Sportswriter, finished on the board in 43 of his 52 career starts.
Jimmy Freight will be standing stud at Winbak’s Ontario location in 2020 for a fee of $5,000. Interested parties are encouraged to inquire about multiple-mare discounts. Also, a limited number of shares are for sale, so please inquire if interested.

Lather Up is already gone;
Lather Up is already gone; American History will be back since The Breeder's Crown was the first major race that he's ever won; Dorsoduro Hanover and Always a Prince are gelded so they'll both obviously be back, so I guess the only 4yo whose connections we're still waiting to hear from as to their plans for their horse in 2020 is Courtly Choice.
