Fresh off his win in the $1 million Metro Pace with Mystician for trainer and friend Jeff Gillis, driver Jody Jamieson will team up with another old friend
on Monday at Tir Prince Raceway in Wales.
"I have wanted to see races in Europe my entire life...not just see races but race there as well," Jamieson told Eric 'G.I. Joe' Haughan of Standardbred Ireland. "One day I hope to retire and want to be able to say that I raced everywhere there was a track to race at."
With North American harness racing in the middle of stakes season, Jamieson's voyage comes just after the major stakes at Mohawk on Saturday and the injury to Doonbeg's regular driver the drive on Doonbeg came up.
Jamieson is flying overseas to drive Doonbeg in the Crock of Gold championship. The opportunity came up when Doonbeg's regular driver Jonathan Dunne was injured.
"The drive on Doonbeg came up surprisingly because of the injury to Jonny Dunne," stated Jamieson. "I had expressed interest in driving him but I also understood that when you have a horse that's already winning why would you want to change anything - especially the driver!"
"I talked to [trainer] Geoff Dunne and he said I could drive 'Dooner' in the Crock final and I accepted very willingly."
Doonbeg and Jamieson teamed up for a magical season in 2006 that culminated with an O'Brien Award as the nation's top three-year-old pacer. In 2008, Doonbeg was exported to Great Britain and has set numerous track records in the UK. A few weeks back, href="/news/8-18-10/world-record-doonbeg.html">Doonbeg paced a mile in 1:53.7 over a track less than a half-mile, believed to be a world record over a short track.
