World-renowned harness racing driver Wally Hennessey will be presented with Charlottetown's Key to the City at the Red Shores Racetrack and Casino on Thursday, September 27 at 8:30 p.m.

Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee said Mr. Hennessey will be given the key for his outstanding athletic accomplishments, inspiring career, and for serving as an ambassador for the Capital City.

"The Wally Hennessey name is synonymous with harness racing in PEI," said Mayor Lee. "He was born and raised in Charlottetown with a family that has deep roots in harness racing and horse training on PEI. Wally started his career here, and through the years, his dedication and commitment has been an inspiration. We’re glad to have him home to visit, and hope the symbolism of this key presentation demonstrates to him that he is always welcome here."

Mr. Hennessey operated his first horse stable in Charlottetown under the supervision of his father when he was still in his teens. Since then, he has travelled the world, winning some of the most prestigious and lucrative races in North America and Europe. He set Maritime records for driving wins for three consecutive years, and later, went on to capture the Canadian Ice Racing Classic. He was inducted into the Florida Sports Hall of Fame, PEI Sports Hall of Fame, and the U.S. Harness Racing Hall of Fame, which is considered to be one of the highest accolades in the sport.

"Wally Hennessey won his 8,000th race in Florida this year, and is one of only 21 people to reach that milestone," said Deputy Mayor Stu MacFadyen. "His accomplishments and dedication to the sport provides a unique inspiration as he has continued to pursue his passion to its fullest. We’re proud to say he’s from Charlottetown, and hope he and his family will continue to visit the Capital City."

The Key to the City is presented to esteemed visitors or residents that the Mayor and Council wish to honour. The key symbolizes that the recipient is welcome to visit Charlottetown at any time as a trusted and respected friend of the City.

The Key to the City tradition dates back to medieval times when the gates to historic cities were kept locked and only the most trusted individuals were granted access.
