Veteran driver and horseman Steve Mason was sent to the Regional Hospital in Saint John, New Brunswick after a spill at Exhibition Park Raceway this past Saturday (September 16).
Exhibition Park Raceway held an afternoon program on Saturday, and it was in Race 3 where Mason's horse, R Es JJ, fell to the track shortly after the start. The dash was ruled a no-contest by the officials.
Mason, a longtime horseman, trainer and driver for the Downey Stables, suffered a shattered elbow and a fractured shoulder.
Mason underwent surgery on his elbow and shoulder on Sunday evening (September 17). Officials with Horse Racing New Brunswick have reported that he is in good spirits, but remains in hospital
Horse Racing New Brunswick will provide updates on Mason’s condition when they become available.
