The Saturday, Aug. 31 card of harness racing at MGM Northfield Park produced many surprises with several longshots winning and Taylor McKean earning her first career training win.
Coffee House, driven by Braiden Rhoades, delivered the 20-year-old McKean her first training win in the ninth race on Saturday, as the longest priced winner of the night at 95-1. Sitting just off the pace early, 12-year-old pacing mare Coffee House rallied three-wide off the final turn and overtook Sudden Change N in the final strides to win in 1:56.4 by three-quarters of a length. A $2 win ticket on Coffee House returned a whopping $194.60 at the mutuels.
McKean, a Pennsylvania horsewoman who owns and trains the upset winner, celebrated her first training triumph in her 54th start.
The Pick-5 went uncovered for a second straight racing night, leading to a big wagering opportunity on Sunday, Sept. 1. The Pick-5, beginning in race six, sports a carryover of $11,950. The $1 wager has a low 14 per cent takeout.
The 50-cent Pick-6, beginning in race eight, also went uncovered on Saturday night and will feature a carryover of $6,844.
