This week's Rewind is another edition of the rather popular Picture Parade. It features a variety of old pictures for your viewing and "guessing" pleasure. Hope you enjoy them!
This week's collection of older pictures all follow a central theme. Each one is connected to an Ontario Sires Stake event taken at some time over the past 48 years. Yes, that's how long the O.S.S. program has been part of the annual racing calendar in Ontario. The first season was 1974 and from the outset it has been an unequalled success for virtually every sector of the sport. The task at hand here is to identify the driver (or drivers) in each photo. If you wish to join with your suggested identity, just jot down the picture number and with it your answer. Answer as many or as few as you wish.
Reminder: There are no residency restrictions; in other words you don't have to live in Ontario to participate.
#1 - Can you identify the driver of number 2? The fellow at the rail is quite visible as well so let's include him. (OSS photo - John Jones photography)
#2 - The driver of number 6 is the question here, plus if you see anyone else that you can identify, include them as well.
#3 - Who do we have here? Can you name this fellow who has owned, trained and driven more than a few OSS performers.
#4 - Who wouldn't smile? You're about to win a race driving the number 11 horse and at odds of about 50-1 there's a good chance there will be a few very happy ticket holders in the audience as well. Who is this man?
#5 - This one may be a little tougher as it is not as clear as many of the others but our experts seem to always be up to the challenge. Can you figure out the identity of this driver who is still active in the training ranks?
#6 - The number 8 in the middle is the winner and can you identify the driver?
#7 - This winning performance took place in an OSS event from the mid-1980's. Can you identify the driver and maybe even the horse?
#8 - Can you name some of the people in this winner's circle gathering? Mrs. Carolynn Astrom (second from left), wife of Eric Astrom, executive assistant to OJC President Jack Kenney, makes the trophy presentation to the happy owners.
#9 - This gent has appeared in a lot of O.S.S. pictures for several decades. Maybe someone can identify the horse as well as naming the driver.
#10 - Who is this young fellow who is displaying a pretty happy face? I am guessing he just won a big race; maybe he struck "Gold".
Quote For The Week: Once again almost a short story. As a youngster I was riding through the countryside with my father a few miles from our home when I noticed that the crops did not look too good. My father said "Son, when the crows fly over this area they carry a lunch with them." Thanks Dad!
Who Is It?
Here is a good shot of the finish of a trotting event at Windsor 40+ years ago. How many drivers can you identify?
Who Else Is It?
Can you name this fine gentleman from days gone by?
This week's rather large
This week's rather large group of pictures I believe were all solved by at least one respondent. The correct answers were as follows:
1 - David Boughton (2) with Jack Kopas at the rail
2 - Jim Whelan (6) with Terry Kerr driving 4
3 - Carl Jamieson driving Elegant Killean
4 - "Smilin" Freddy Goudreau
5 - Jerry Duford at Elmira with Super Fortune
6 - Ken Hardy driving (8) Jazzy Jen with Jack Wray second with 5
7 - Doug Arthur driving Mystery Skipper
8 - From left: George Plyley, Carol Astrom, Aileens Tour, Harold Jr. "Buddy" Wellwood, Harold Sr. and his wife Marjorie (Hodgins), Bud's parents.
9 - Bud Fritz with Annie Ivy at Windsor
10 - Chris Christoforou Jr.
Who Is It? - McCloud driven by Ron Topping (7), Les Turcotte (5), Don McIllmurray (1) and Claybrook Van (2) with Rod Duford on the bike. As a note of interest while not part of the quiz the horse on the far outside who was obscured was Bachelor Party driven by Jerry Duford.
Who Else ? - Correctly identified as Dave Green.
Special mention to Ashley Duford who spotted her two uncles among this week's pictures.
