The 2015 Manitoba Great Western Harness Racing Circuit began on Saturday afternoon at Morris with the circuit's 2014 top owner Trevor Williams sending out back-to-back winners during his first race card as a trainer.
The 28-year-old resident of Winnipeg had four starters on the eight-race card.
Minnesota shipper Whata Smoothie gave Williams his first training win as the five-year-old Intrepid Seelster mare held on by a head over Dougies Deal to win the sixth race for $2,500 claiming mares in 2:06.2 on a "good" track.
Fancy Camelot romped to a four and a quarter length victory in the following $1,700 Fillies & Mares Open Pace, scoring in 2:03.4 over Smoky Moon while Phoenician Gal finished a distant third. The win was the nine-year-old Camelot Hall mare's 40th lifetime.
Both of Williams' winners were driven by the circuit's 2014 leading driver Don Howlett.
Harness racing continues at Morris on Sunday, with first race post time at 1:30 p.m., and then shifts to Glenboro next weekend.
