In harness racing, a pretty horse doesn’t always mean a fast horse. However, in the case of Type A Grey, pretty does mean fast.
The two-year-old daughter of Art Official stormed to a wire-to-wire 1:57.2 victory in her $40,000 Ohio Sires Stakes event on Sunday night (July 3) at Northfield Park for driver Chris Page in her pari-mutuel debut.
Trained by Brian Brown for Emerald Highlands Farm of Mount Vernon, Ohio, Type A Grey lead through fractions of :29.1, :59.1 and 1:28.3 and went on to sweep under the wire unchallenged.
Owner Bruce Trogden purchased the lanky filly as a yearling at the 2015 Standardbred Horse Sale at Harrisburg for $20,000.
“I liked her pedigree,” Bruce said. “She comes from a strong, old maternal family. The fact that she was grey was a plus because I really like grey horses and have purchased many of them over the years. When I saw her in the flesh I was surprised she was as good looking as her pedigree suggested.”
“Bruce bought her after I had already gone home,” Brian admitted. “She’s a very sound, sensible filly and one of those that you can jog all day long. In fact, if you don’t take a whip out there with you to jog, you will be out there all day long. She’s kind of lazy in that regard, and really didn’t show a lot of spunk until her last two training sessions and then she just kind of put it all together. Having Chris (driver Page) handle her is an added bonus because he really takes care of these young horses and babies them along. Sometimes I have to ask him not to baby them so much and to get after them a little bit, but Chris is one of those who is always thinking of the horse and their early education.”
Type A Grey was one of 14 Ohio Sires Stakes winners that was in action at Northfield on Sunday, July 3.
