He did it. Marc Campbell reached a career milestone Thursday at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park when he drove Ultimate Faith to victory in Race 7. It was Campbell’s 1,000th win.
The O’Brien Award winner sent the six-year-old mare, owned by Abel Arsenault, Saint John, NB, to the top and raced through fractions of :28.3, :58.3 and 1:29 before hitting the finish line in a 1:57.4 score for trainer Philip DesRoches.
Campbell was greeted in the crowded winner’s circle by family and friends. Adam Walsh representing Red Shores and the PEI Standardbred Horse Owners Association made a presentation to Campbell marking the special occasion.
Campbell ended the night with another victory aboard Painted Pony in 1:56.2 for win 1,001.
The evening’s feature went to Blue Star Outlaw and driver Jason Hughes in 1:55.1. Blue Star Outlaw tracked fraction setter First Art Down (Walter Cheverie) through splits of :27.2, :55.3 and 1:25.3 before overpowering the leader through the stretch. Don MacRae of Vernon Bridge is the winning owner. First Art Down was second while Roscoes Child(Brodie MacPhee) finished third.
In other action, Honeymoonisover, driven by Brian Andrew, and Majian Chester, with Jim Ripley in the bike, hit the line together in a rare dead-heat for win in the evening’s trot class. The time of the mile was 2:01.2. Diamond Mine and Willie Murphy was third.
Vaughn Doyle and Brodie MacPhee also had driving doubles on the program. Doyle is only six wins away from hitting his 1,000 career win plateau.
