Gun Show took advantage of a late break by Jetstream Friskie to win the $35,300 Ohio Sires Stakes for freshman pacers at Scioto Downs on Saturday evening
.
Dan Noble piloted the colt to a half-length win over favourite Feelin Perfect and Kyle Ater in 1:57.
American Friskie and driver David Myers set the fractions for the first three-quarters, then Feelin Perfect came to call on the outside. Jetstream Friskie was right behind Feelin Perfect.
In the stretch, Jetstream Friskie paced past Feelin Perfect and loomed a winner nearing the wire. Then he suddenly broke stride and driver Kayne Kauffman had to gather him up. That allowed Gun Show to zoom past the leader in the final strides. Jetstream Friskie finished second, but was placed third for his break while Feelin Perfect was moved from third to second in the placing.
Driver Noble was candid about his victory in a post-race interview, saying, “I was looking to be second because I wouldn’t have won if Kayne’s colt didn’t make a break.”
It was the first purse start for Gun Show, who is owned by Milton Leeman and Dustin Arledge and trained by Jim Arledge, Jr. The first three finishers were all sired by the first crop Ohio sire Feelin Friskie.
In other Ohio Sires Stakes action for two-year-olds, trotting specialist Marty Wollam won impressively with Count Me In, who marched to the lead with a snappy brush during the third quarter, overtaking pacesetting Jailbird Jesse. Once Count Me In was on the lead, he won as he pleased for Arcadia Farms and Patricia Wollam. It was his first career win. Jailbird Jesse held on for second while Carolina Carl claimed the show dough. His time was an easy-does-it 2:00.1.
In the other Ohio Sires Stakes for first-season trotters, Rock N Jessie wore down a game Cody Coy for driver Ray Paver to notch a 1:59.4 win in his first start. He triumphed over Cody Coy by two and a quarter lengths while Captain Jesse got up for third. Ron Burke trains the winners for Burke Stable, Slaughter Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi and Howard Taylor.
Kayne Kauffman scored an upset win in the final of the High Street Pacing Series with Deetox, shooting to the lead from Post 8 and never relinquishing it in the 1:55.3 mile. The five-year-old gelding lowered his mark more than three seconds in the win for trainer John Predmore and owner April Predmore.
Deetox paid $24,20 to win and defeated a pair of longshots in Alex Capital and Magic Ball, triggering a $329.25 trifecta.
