Phoos Boy As Tough As They Come

The road to finding the winner’s circle has proved to be a tough one for pacer Phoos Boy, but challenges are something he’s been dealing with throughout his whole life.

The miracle horse, who survived a gunshot attack while turned out with his mother when he was just 2-1/2 months old, broke his maiden in a $6,050 overnight assignment at Rideau Carleton Raceway – much to the delight of owner/breeder Robert Montgomery and trainer Steven Norris.

A six-year-old son of Art Colony-Miss Poole, Phoos Boy rallied to win in 1:57.2 for driver Rodney La Framboise. Morenci was next best, with race favourite Yoshi taking home third prize.

A combination of savvy handicappers, longshot players and sentimentalists at heart were handsomely rewarded at the windows as the gelding kicked back a healthy return of $23.70 for each $2 win ticket.

Driver Guy Gagnon did his fair share of winning on the 10-race card.

The reinsman, who recently celebrated his 5,000th lifetime win, potted five victories thanks to trips to victory lane with Virgin Gold (1:57.1), Aerial Flight (1:59.4), E R Rhonda (1:54), Winning Drive (1:53.2) and Silverado (1:55.1).

The teamster from Gatineau, QC has racked up 118 wins so far this year while banking more than $500,000 in the process.

The program also featured the opening leg of the Hard Rocking Gals Claiming Series, with $5,500 divisions going to Ideal Space (1:55.1), Mccovey Cove N (1:56.3) and Momara (1:55.4).
