On Sunday, June 19 the 2011 season of live racing at Hippodrome de Quebec kicked off on the right hoof. A crowd of more than 2,500 people took up the Quebec Jockey Club's invitation to take in the track's 10-race card to the sounds of the Roland Martel Orchestra
, composed of 17 musicians.
Numerous fans put their hard-earned cash on the line. Nearly $45,000 was wagered on the card overall, an unprecedented level in recent years (the last time that amount was wagered at Hippodrome de Quebec was in 2006).
The Maurice Tanguay Foundation, which helps children with disabilities, also benefited from the event by raking in $2,000 from the sales of hot dogs and soft drinks, which were offered for 50 cents a piece.
"[Racehorses] still have their place in the hearts of Quebecers," said Quebec Jockey Club President Tony Infilise. "Horse racing gives a unique show and catches the attention."
"All staff have put their nose to the grind, especially during preparations for the last few days and I want to thank all for their tremendous work," said Hippodrome de Quebec General Manager Vincent Trudel. "In addition to our employees and suppliers, we also looked to the authorities and their cooperation. It was a success as a team and we will continue as a team to ensure the sustainability of the industry."
On the track, the mare Sans Frontiere was the highlight of the day, scoring the best performance in a 1:59.4 mile with Marie-Claude Auger in the lines.
Trotters and pacers will return to action on Sunday, June 26 with a first-race post time of 1:00 p.m.
