“That horse has brought me more than a few big smiles. He’s given me a great reason to watch the races again.”
In an industry that tends to follow the progress of high-profile yearling purchases, it’s always refreshing to see the lower-end buys make a name for themselves. And, so far, Physicallyinclined has done just that.
Everything being equal, the three-year-old Mach Three colt hasn’t really taken the world by storm just yet. He hasn’t hauled down a Grand Circuit stakes event. He hasn’t set a world record to this point. He hasn’t stamped himself as any type of ‘superstar’ just yet.
Now, enough about what he hasn’t accomplished, because for a colt that was sold for a mere $4,500 in the fall of 2013, Physicallyinclined has done quite a bit.
As of present date, Physicallyinclined has made 11 starts and banked just under $80,000 in purse earnings. He broke his maiden last October in what was the final start of his freshman campaign. The bay has won two of his three starts this year. The wins came in conditioned events at Mohawk Racetrack.
Although Physicallyinclined didn’t win his race this past Friday at Western Fair – in what was the seasonal kick-off of the Ontario Sires Stakes program – the colt was competitive and determined throughout. He was just a head short of the victor, Sportskeeper, in a 1:53 mile.
In a profile piece by Ryan Cooke for the Truro Daily News, the colt’s co-owner, Bruce McGean, quipped that Physicallyinclined’s purchase price “doesn’t mean anything” to him. “They (horses) don’t know how much you paid for them.”
Additionally, Physicallyinclined doesn’t know that McGean and fellow co-owner Sterling Feener recently made the final sustaining payment to keep him eligible to the $1.5 million Pepsi North America Cup. If he is ultimately entered for the ‘Cup’ eliminations, Physicallyinclined will presumably face the gate with some of those aforementioned six-figure glamour boys.
Feener – who offered the quote that helped kick off this story – has said that he is “just a big fan” of harness racing and that McGean is the nuts-and-bolts horseman of the duo.
Physicallyinclined is expected to be entered to contest the Somebeachsomewhere Stakes, which is scheduled to be contested this Saturday (June 6) at Mohawk.
Looking back on that fateful sale day two years ago, McGean said, “We had this guy picked out, but we didn’t think we’d actually get him. We waited it out and we ended up getting him real cheap.”
Now, Physicallyinclined is showing the glamour boy division that he is anything but ‘cheap.’

Here is a true story that's even better. I bought a mare in foal for $1000 at Harrisburg. Her name is Common Sense. How many people do you know can say they bought Common Sense for $1000.00?
