San Pail showed no mercy to the five foes he squared off with in Monday evening’s $45,000 Open Trot at Woodbine Racetrack, and he barely broke a sweat to do it
.
With Randy Waples in tow, San Pail floated off the gate and tucked into an early three hole while Kashs Caviar sprinted the square gaiters to the quarter pole in :26.1. Kashs Caviar turned into the backstretch with the lead, but as expected San Pail was on the move. He brushed to the top in an effortless manner, and once in command of the tempo he coasted through marshmallowy-soft middle panels of :56 and 1:26. With that type of middle half breather San Pail had no problem summoning up :27.1 final quarter speed, which was more than enough to sprint away from runner-up Hes A Demon by 1-1/2 lengths. Before He Cheats rallied from last to finish third in the 1:53.1 affair.
Trainer Rod Hughes co-owns the seven-year-old son of San Pellegrino-Village Beauty with co-owner/breeder Glenn Van Camp of Port Perry, ON. The victory was the gelding’s third of the season and the 38th of his career. The $22,500 payday bumps San Pail’s lifetime earnings to $1,824,715.
