The 13th race Pocono Downs last night certainly wasn’t unlucky for one fan that scored the largest trifecta payoff in the history of the racetrack.

The winning $2 ticket returned $12,656.80. The previous Pocono trifecta record was $9,340.40 in 2002.

The first three finishers that comprised the record ticket were the four, eight and one horse. No. 4, Underestimated, won the $5,000 claiming trot as a 22-1 long shot. No. 8, Swanderful, which was a 75-1 long shot, finished second in the dash, while the No. 1 horse, Evander Hollyfield, at odds of 5-1, was third.

If Pocono did not have a ridiculously high 35% takeout on trifectas, the winning patron would have received significantly more. In the midst of the track's rising purses, and a recently increased 30 % bonus to Pa.-bred, -owned, or -trained horses, it seems ludicrous that the takeout is not reduced. No serious bettor who wagers significant amounts of money bets Pocono, and the anemic handles reflect that. Having been awarded future Breeders Crown races, track management should sit down with the state politicians and do something about the nation's highest takeout.
