Sent postward as the longest shot on the board, pacing mare Keystone Samurai lit up the toteboard with a 45-1 upset in the second race on Friday night at Western Fair Raceway to give Ryan Steward his first training victory.
After getting away mid-pack in the field of $5,000 claiming mares and fillies, nine-year-old Keystone Samurai rallied three-wide into the stretch and out-sprinted first over Angel From Above for the half-length victory in 1:59.1. Meanwhile, pacesetter Mobro Flirt finished three and a half lengths behind in third.
Steward's milestone win was a family affair as his younger brother Nick drove the Camluck-Keystone Skyline mare.
Keystone Samurai was making her eighth start for the 28-year-old resident of Lucan, Ont.
She returned $92.50 to win.
