It looks as though driver Mario Baillargeon will have to play the waiting game just a little bit longer before attempting his return to the sulky
.
Baillargeon, who was interviewed on Monday evening's edition of Race Night on The Score, admits he returned to the bike too soon following a serious leg injury sustained in a nasty spill at Woodbine Racetrack on March 2, 2009 in the final of the Ontario Boys Pacing Series.
“I guess I probably rushed coming back,” said Baillargeon, who returned to the bike on May 4 and drove up until May 9 before shutting things down. “I should have waited another week. Now I’m probably going to have sit down for another two weeks.
“I was told I have to do some more physiotherapy, so I do that every day now and I go to the swimming pool,” he added. “I could see a little improvement yesterday, as a matter of fact. I could walk in the pool pretty good; it just takes time. As soon as I’m able to walk; as soon as my legs can carry my weight – which is 140 lbs – I’ll probably be able to drive a horse.”
The career winner of 6,587 races and purses in excess of $73 million realizes he has to be fighting fit before attempting his next comeback.
“Until I’m able to walk, I won’t be able to drive,” said Baillargeon. “I can see improvement every day, and I was told by next Thursday I should be able to walk. I think right now it is on a day-to-day basis and we’ll see how it goes.
