Trotter V Js Viceroy was euthanized on March 16 at the age of 18 after being struck by lightning at his farm
in Port Perry, Ont.
V Js Viceroy was purchased at the 1995 Royal Blue Yearling Sale for $10,000 by Paul Van Camp and was trained by Bob Havery, Joe Stutzman and Rocco Auciello. The King Conch-Strumpet gelding competed in the 2000 Maple Leaf Trot and beat the likes of Corn Cob Conch, Glorys Comet, Goodtimes, and Hanko Angus during his racing career.
“He was the first horse that I picked out and bought on my own,” Van Camp told Trot Insider. “I don’t think he was ever on the lead at the half -- he always came from behind -- which I loved and he never didn’t try.”
V Js Viceroy was retired from racing early in 2005 at the age of 11 with a lifetime record reading 30-21-17 in 172 starts, nearly $600,000 in purse earnings, and a mark of 1:55.4 taken at Mohawk Racetrack during his eight-year-old campaign.
The bay trotter remained with Van Camp in the following years and enjoyed a great second career as a riding horse.
