Things didn’t go very well for Roca Rei in last week’s Fillies & Mares Preferred-2 at The Raceway at The Western Fair District, but she enjoyed a bounce back performance in Tuesday’s edition of the class.
A tough post contributed to an eighth-place finish last Tuesday for Roca Rei, but she started from Post 5 in today’s tilt and managed to catch-second over cover in the featured affair.
Trevor Henry got away fourth with the five-year-old daughter of Cheyenne Rei-Roca Suave, but he had her on the move going to the half. She tracked the cover of Wiskywisky Nancy O until the late stages of the mile before being cut loose and using a :28.3 closing panel to secure the half-length decision. Putnam Mackenzie, who sat the pocket trip throughout, was next best with heavily favoured Rachel Olivia settling for third after laying down the speed.
Richard Moreau trains Roca Rei, who was sent off at odds of 6-1, for owner John Gryszczuk of St. Marys, ON. The 19-time winner bumped her lifetime earnings to $168,374 and improved this year’s record to 2-1-3 from 13 starts with the win.
A set of $5,600 Preferred-3 events for the gals were also contested during the 12-race card, with Cards That Count and Sammy Syd taking home top prize in their respective assignments.
Cards That Count turned a pocket trip into a 1:57.1 triumph for driver Trevor Henry and trainer Peter Core. Sent off at odds of 3-5, the five-year-old daughter of Cams Card Shark-Special Addition hauled down the pacesetting Insincerity to win by a neck in 1:57.1. Pathmarks, who closed at odds of 63-1, was third.
Donald & Heather McGregor of Camlachie, ON share ownership on the winner of $122,016. The victory was the mare’s third of the season and the sixth of her career.
Sammy Syd, who was making her second start off-the-shelf for trainer Jean Young, also turned a two-hole trip into a win. J.R. Plante manufactured the sweet journey for the nine-year-old daughter of Astreos-Quest For Truth who sprinted home in :29.2 to post the half-length decision over race favourite Misty Moonstone in 1:57.2. Chappies Girl was third.
Sent off at odds of 5-1, Sammy Syd picked up her first win of the season and the 37th of her career. Jean & Gord Young of London, ON own the winner of $345,383 to date.
