On Thursday, April 20, trainer Ashley Nostadt was honoured at Windsor's Caboto Club when she was announced as the 2012 recipient of the Windsor Essex Sports Persons of the Year Awards' John Ferguson/Circle of Seven Horseman of the Year award

.

Nostadt's stable sent out 408 starters in 2011 and recorded 67 wins and 184 on-the-board finishes. Her charges raced to $378,691 in purse earnings last season, and her stable fired at a .297 clip.

Her solid numbers are continuing in 2012, as from 159 starts her charges have already won 30 races and banked $143,325.

“It’s exciting to win as the first female,” Nostadt, 24, was quoted as saying afterward in an article by The Windsor Star. “But I hope this can be breakthrough for all females in the sport."

The resident of Amherstberg, Ont. went on to say, “It’s (horse racing) not a typical sport for women and I hope it leads to more getting involved.”

Former professional basketball player Christian Laettner was the evening's keynote speaker. In the early '90s, Laettner hit what is arguably one of the biggest shots in NCAA basketball history when his Duke Blue Devils defeated the Kentucky Wildcats in the year-ending NCAA 'March Madness' Tournament.
