“What does a sustainable horse racing industry mean, given what’s happened in the last year?”
That was the question asked by Don Leschied, a member of the Lakeshore Horse Raceway group, after listening to Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne's industry announcements at Grand River Raceway last Friday.
Leschied's comments have come via an article by The Windsor Star.
In addition to announcing that more rental agreements had been reached with a handful of Ontario racetracks, Wynne promised that the province's battered horse-racing industry will be incorporated into the province's gaming modernization plans going forward.
Wynne did not qualify how Ontario racing will be worked into the modernization.
The Premier also said that Ontario horse racing will have access to revenue streams from "new and different gaming opportunities" under the arrangement. Wynne did not say where or what the revenue streams would be, nor did she discuss any dollar amounts.
The vagueness of Wynne's announcement led to horseman Mark Williams describing the announcement as “hollow” and “more rhetoric.”
