J J J Stables' award-winning filly Scardy Cat picked up where she left off last season with a stakes victory in her sophomore debut on Friday night (March 9) at Fraser Downs.
Following a near-perfect freshman campaign which earned her the distinction as B.C.'s Two-Year-Old Filly of the Year, Scardy Cat lowered her lifetime mark to 1:56.1 in the $40,000 B.C. Sales Stakes with Paul Davies aboard for trainer Debra McCarthy.
Sent postward as the 1-5 favourite, the homebred Sportswriter-Cats Meow filly followed early leader Hurried Romance through panels of :28.2 and :59.2 before rushing to command. She passed three-quarters in 1:27.4 and opened up four lengths turning for home. In the race for place, Custard Lite edged out Hurried Romance, finishing just over two lengths behind the winner.
Scardy Cat, who paid $2.40 to win, won four of her five stakes in 2017 including the B.C. Breeders Stakes championship and The Fraser Miss. She banked $81,250 while finishing no worse than second-place.
In other racing action, Robert Scrannage celebrated his first training victory as pacing mare Janet Rose ($8.60) came through the passing lane to top her $4,000 claiming rivals in 1:58.4. The 24-year-old Delta, B.C. resident also drives and owns the mare.
