CPMA Announces Steroid Testing

In a memorandum to the Canadian horse racing industry, the Canadian Pari-Mutuel Agency has announced that effective June 1, 2009, it will be implementing testing for boldenone, nandrolone, stanozolol and testosterone

.

The CPMA also announced that any graded stakes races occurring before June 1will be tested for anabolic steroids.

The memo states that thresholds and withdrawal guidance for anabolic steroids are consistent with standards established by international and American regulatory bodies:

• Water-based products, single dose -- 30 days

• Oil-based products, single dose -- 45 days

• All products, multiple doses -- minimum 60 days after the last dose.

The memo also states that testing for non-veterinary-approved anabolic steroids is currently in place, and that positives for those drugs might occur at any time.

It is good that at least now there is consistency between Canada and the U.S., the same rules apply to everyone now.

When they say "non-veterinary-approved", I wonder about drugs like trenbolone which are veterinary approved for cattle, but should obviously fall into a banned substance in race horses?
