It was a day of winning streaks Monday at The Raceway at the Western Fair District thanks to a sixth consecutive tally by claiming pacer L H Lil Count and back-to-back trips to victory lane by Dreamfair Kovu.
J.R. Plante mapped out the winning trip for Dreamfair Kovu, who overcame Post 7 and swept the field en route to winning the featured $13,200 Preferred. The five-year-old son of P Forty Seven-J Cs Nathalie sat last in the field of eight while Winter Blues supplied first-half fractions of :27.4 and :57.4. Plante fired his charge into the centre of the track in the backstretch and made an assault on leader Winter Blues who had the field chasing him to the three-quarter pole in 1:27.3. Dreamfair Kovu’s :30.2 closing panel was good enough to earn him the win by 1-1/2 lengths over Mach It Big in 1:58.4 over a track rated ‘good’ with a two-second allowance. Rollem Up took home the show dough.
Sent off at odds of 6-1 in his bid to double up, Dreamfair Kovu improved this year’s record to 2-0-1 for trainer Pat Fletcher and owner/breeder John Lamers of Ingersoll, ON. The 11-time winner increased his lifetime earnings to $156,325 with the win.
Earlier on the card fans watch L H Lil Count win his $6,000 claiming assignment, and in doing so he pushed his winning streak to six-in-a-row for trainer Mike Bishop. Nick Steward pointed the pacer to the lead and after parking past the quarter-pole in a :28-second clip the gelding motored to top and laid down middle panels of :59 and 1:29.1 before cruising home to win by 6-1/4 lengths in 2:00.1.
Sarah Cottrell of Ingersoll, ON owns the six-year-old son of Astreos-Noble Contessa, who is 4-for-4 this season after going 5-for-36 last year. The lion’s share of Monday’s purse lifted his lifetime cash stash to $91,522.
