Trot Insider has learned that two-time O'Brien Award winner and millionaire Caprice Hill has been retired from racing and is joining the broodmare ranks.
Caprice Hill (Kadabra - Bramasole) dominated the Ontario Sires Stakes program at both two and three for owner Tom Hill and trainer Tony Alagna, posting a 7-2-0 record in nine provincial stakes starts.
Over those seasons, Caprice Hill also posted Grand Circuit victories in the Champlain and Peaceful Way (at two), the Casual Breeze, Simcoe and Matron (at three). Those freshman and sophomore campaigns garnered national recognition with back-to-back O'Brien Awards in 2015 and 2016.
While not enjoying the same level as success as an older performer, Caprice Hill managed top-three scores in the Steele Memorial, Joie De Vie, Miss Versatility, Breeders Crown and TVG at four as well as the Miami Valley Distaff, Armbro Flight, Steele Memorial, Allerage Farm and Breeders Crown as a five-year-old. Her career summary stands at 16-15-11 from 52 career starts with more than $1.5 million in purse earnings. Caprice Hill took her mark of 1:52.3f in the Matron at Dover Downs and boasts a best beaten time of 1:50.1 in her third last start this past October at The Red Mile.
Hill told Trot Insider that Caprice Hill will be bred to Chapter Seven in 2019.
While the final career start of Caprice Hill will be charted as that third-place finish in the 2018 Breeders Crown, Hill stated that the plan was never to end there and the mare came out of that race in great shape. She was then pointed to the TVG at The Meadowlands under the care of trainer Marcus Melander but was denied entry to that race.
