After spending the last seven years in North America, Swedish-born driver Tomas Dalborg recently returned to his native country and is making headlines.
The 28-year-old Swede left Canada in July to train and drive back home with his own stable, currently comprised of nine horses. On Thursday night, Dalborg sent out the first horse from his own stable at Åby. At odds of nearly 46-1, Dalborg guided Careful Victory to victory in a leg of the V86 -- the highest-priced winner of the pick-8 style bet, prompting a payout of €426,430 for a ticket with all eight correct.
Dalborg continued his upset-minded exploits in Saturday's V75, the last V75 of the year in Sweden. Once again, Dalborg guided a longshot -- this time, 26-1 shot Prima Donna -- to victory in the fifth leg at Axevalla. The total wagered in the V75 was more than C$16.9-million and Dalborg's longshot score helped provide punters with a payoff of more than C$173,000 for all seven correct.
According to Swedish media, Dalborg headed back to his home country when purse money "disappeared" in Ontario as a result of the changes to the province's slots-at-racetracks program.
