"I’m pretty proud to be nominated. There are a lot of great horsemen in Canada. And, it’s kind of nice for someone from the Maritimes to be recognized," horseman Phil Pinkney, 71, was quoted as saying about his nomination for an O'Brien Award, which was announced yesterday.

Pinkney made the comments during a telephone interview with The Chronicle Herald.

Pinkney, along with John Kopas, is a finalist for the O'Brien Award of Horsemanship.

The O'Brien Awards are named in honour of the late Joe O'Brien, an outstanding horseman and a member of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. The winners will be announced at the O’Brien Awards banquet on Saturday, January 31, 2009.

I am from Ontario, and have only saw Phil drive in a couple races last year, and met briefly. He deserves to win this award, as with all great champions, you can tell the first time you see them, they are a natural at their sport. Phil is above and beyond all in the sport of racing.. Good Luck..Phil.

..and he should win this year! the east coasters don't have the numbers(money!) like Ontario but I hope people are taking notice of who the top horsemen/drivers are in Canada these days. Phil is and has been the best of the best for a long time!

a class act and deserving candidate with countless maritimebred champions as well as few that held there own on the grand circuit.not only produces top colts but turned out a couple of decent horsemen in his son dale and friend brent mcgrath .kudos phil

Well deserved, great horseman, should of won it last year.
