Lorne Duffield's homebred filly Dark Horse Wine nosed out Hurry Home at the wire for a maiden-breaking victory in the $6,500 second leg of the Century Milers Pacing Series for Alberta-sired two-year-old fillies on Friday night (Nov. 29) at Century Mile.
Opening leg winner Mysticurb was first to the front through a 31-second first quarter before Hurry Home swept up from an early three-hole and took over command. She then led the seven-horse field through a half in 1:00.2 and three-quarters in 1:30.1 with Chasing Shadows advancing first-up and Mysticurb following the cover.
Meanwhile, Dark Horse Wine, who followed mid-field most of the way, improved position along the rail as the outer flow developed and she was able to slip out at the top of the stretch and steal the spotlight at the end of the 1:59.4 mile. Doug Chappell worked out the winning trip aboard the JK Royal Flush-Marilyn Merlot filly for trainer Rod Hennessy. Chasing Shadows edged out Mysticurb for third.
Dark Horse Wine came within three-quarters of a length of winning her career debut in the series on November 15. She was sent postward as the 7-2 second choice tonight in her second start and paid $9.10 to win.
The Century Milers Pacing Series is for non-winners of $15,000 lifetime as of November 3.
