A driving double at Georgian Downs on Tuesday evening behind a pair of Ely Iversen-trained trotters enabled driver Robert Shepherd to join the 1,000-win club
.
The young reinsman entered the 11-race program needing a pair of wins to hit the target, and he struck in the seventh race with Minor Supernover to cut his magic number to one. Minor Supernover survived a first over journey to win in 1:59.1, and in the process he pushed Shepherd win total to 999.
Minor Supernover’s stablemate, Secret Lives, found his way to the winner’s circle in the very next race for Shepherd, who got the job done in style with the four-year-old son of Conway Hall. The gelding was third at the quarter pole, but he sprinted to the top before the half. Once he cleared to the lead he didn’t look back en route to posting the 1:57.4 decision over Mystic Conquest and New Dice Please in the $15,000 Preferred Trot for horses and geldings.
Shepherd, who spent a good portion of the season rehabbing serious injuries he incurred in a scary spill at Woodbine in March, has racked up 118 wins this season while banking just over $1 million in purse earnings. He enjoyed a career year in 2008 thanks to his 399 victories and purse earnings in excess of $2.8 million.
