Demolition of barns over 50 years old began this week at Charlottetown Driving Park as part of a $2 million reconstruction project funded by the provincial and federal government and P.E.I. Standardbred Horse Owners Association (PEISHOA), according to a report.

The CBC has reported that the old barns are being replaced by one large 120-stall barn with improved ventilation for the local horsemen and equine athletes.

"Brand new wash stalls in it, heated bath stalls, tack rooms, storage rooms. A really nice safe facility to house horses in. Also a nice airy, fresh facility," explained Colleen Dickie, president of the PEISHOA. "Where some of these horses are stabled now, I mean, the conditions are really not great."

The provincial and federal governments are reportedly contributing $1.5 million for the project with an additional $500,000 in funding coming from PEISHOA. The new barn is expected to be completed by June.

Just imagine little old PEI is leading Canada in Harness Racing, too bad the other Provinces wouldn't follow, the government in PEI have seen the light and knows that Harness Racing is good for their community. Hats off to the Government of PEI and the ones who are leading the way in Harness Racing.
