Trainer Under House Arrest For Fraud

Published: January 26, 2009 10:08 am EST

According to a report in the St. Thomas Times-Journal, trainer Gerald Manneke of Alviston, Ontario was handed a 12-month conditional sentence, including six months of house arrest, after he pleaded guilty to a charge of fraud over $5,000 in St. Thomas court last Tuesday.

The article states that Manneke, who worked for Thompsons Ltd., a West Elgin grain dealer, was charged with fraud after his time records listed "impossible turnaround times," which cost the company more than $453,000.

Manneke is allowed outside of his home for nine hours a day to train his horses and three hours per week for shopping and personal needs.

Can anyone tell me if the ORC is investigating? And if not, is there any way we can launch a protest to get them to do this? This poor excuse for a man should NOT be allowed to keep his trainers license. What I really want to know is how did he get it in the first place. He was charged civilly in 2006. Did he not have to disclose this fact on his app? Surely now that he has been criminally convicted, they MUST do something.

Why would this man be aloud out for nine hours to jog his own horses which are now in his girlfriends name, his training stats show he earned a little over $4000.00 in /08 at this rate it will take forever for him to pay back over $350,000 all his assets should be sold and given to Thompson's and he should be thrown in jail. This shows that our justice system is a joke and to let him to continue to race horses is also a joke. Why is the ORC not investigating?

he should be banned for sure..he might have bought horses with that money... are any of his horses racing? and at what track

He has been racing at Flamboro and Windsor. In fact, one of his horses was just listed as an AE1 on flamboro fillies and mares 4500 claimer in Flamboro this past Wed and he has one into qualify.
I really hope the ORC does an investigation and this guy is banned. Can you imagine? Guilty on fraud charges and allowed to continue racing in an industry fraught with integrity challenges.
I can't believe he is roaming around free in a community in which he stole from. I can't imagine being able to look anyone in the eye after what he did. SHAME SHAME SHAME!!!!!!

I don't understand why the ORC and Standardbred Canada have not done something about this. The article says that Mr Manneke was ordered to pay restitution fees in the amount of 373,000.00 dollars back in may of 06. This was clearly a civil suit outcome pending the felony portion. How was Mr. Manneke allowed to obtain his trainers license in the first place? And now that he has been found guilty, how is he able to keep his trainers license??? And what about the actions of his girlfriend, accepting his horses in her name so that they could not be taken as partial payment?
Allowing Mr. Manneke to keep his trainers license is a mistake. It, once again, sends the message that fraud is ok and welcome in this sport.
Let's stop allowing the cheaters to prevail. ORC, investigate this and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!!!!!

Seems to me that once one is convicted of an offence all horse priveledges should be withdrawn. Sorry Jerry in my opinion you forfeited this priveledge. I hope they reconsider Your involement as well.

The ORC should be involved in this.......and yes to the question about checking criminal backgrounds.....whenever it is time to renew mine as an owner I have to fill the papers out(or do they really care).....what is happening to this industry? The girlfriend in this case should have some consequences too, as the names were transferred upon knowledge of his criminal act....what is she thinking? Why are we taking his entries....I checked he has been in to race........

Seems to me that this article has little to do with horse racing, other than the fact that Mr. Manneke happens to now be a horse trainer. I don't know Mr. Manneke personally, but I have been following harness racing for the past year, with a healthy personal interest. I don't own horses, or have any connection to the industry, except as an observer. I have no personal knowledge of Mr. Manneke's conduct as a trainer. However, apparently Mr. Manneke has a history of fraud and cheating, as this article reports that there were over 50 incidents of fraud over a period of three years. That tells me something about his character. As far as it pertains to harness racing, if he's going to cheat his employer, there is a pretty good chance that he's going to cheat on the track as well. People who practice fraud will do it no matter what industry they are involved in. As an observer of harness racing, and someone who is developing a keen interest in the sport, both as a spectator and maybe someday as an owner, I have to say that in my view, it hurts the sport. This is a sport that people bet on. As a spectator, I don't want to bet on something that is supposed to be, and is in fact represented to be, fair and equitable. If I were an owner, trainer, or driver, I would be especially upset that anyone would continue to be allowed to participate in a sport who might be cheating. This sport does have rules, and just like any other sport, if those rules are violated, the perpetrators should be fined, suspended, or otherwise dealt with appropriately. Whenever there is fraud involved, people lose real money, drivers, trainers, owners, and spectators alike. People work real hard in this sport, just like any other, to become successful, and it is frustrating when cheaters are allowed to continue...especially when people know they are cheating. It does damage to the sport overall.

What a disgusting display!!! Shame on anyone who allows this man to train their horses. It's hard enough in this business these days with the cloud of questions surrounding our industry with respect to the lack of integrity. We certainly don't need the stench of Gerald Manneke to add to this. I can't believe he will be allowed to keep his trainers license and continue to bring shame and questionable tactics to this industry. It's hard to ask the betting public to support us, with people like this allowed to roam free. Shame on you Gerry. You defrauded this company and stole from your community. You are a black mark on this industry.

I dont think I am mistaken but, is your ORC license not revoked if you are found guilty of a criminal offense? How do some get away with this?

This is truly unbelievable........let him out to work.......whatever. Very Bad Gerry....you should lose the priviledge of having horses.....cheaters never prosper

This is really the type of person the general betting public wants to see racing horses. Any normal person would have to think all non horsepeople reading this website would see this and take their betting money and run. It is sort of funny when you think of it. The sport needs to be promoted in a positive light and showing that fraud artists are allowed to race horses probably won't fill too many grandstands.

THOMPSON'S SHOULD TAKE THE HORSES AND HE SHOULD BE PUT IN JAIL. WHAT A JOKE HE IS ALLOWED OUT FOR 9 HOURS A DAY.

It would be great if Thompsons could take the horses but he switched them out of his name and into his girl friends name. Once a fraud, always a fraud.

Then shouldn't his girlfriend be held accountable as well? Doesn't say much for her character either. We don't need either of them in the industry It's time to start taking out the trash!
