The waters near Nisku, Alberta were rightfully feared as Shark Week and Outlaw Sharktastic took a bite out of their co-featured Preferred classes on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at Century Mile.
Shark Week went gate-to-wire on top in the $12,500 Preferred Pace with Mike Hennessy holding the lines for trainer Rod Hennessy. The Vertical Horizon-Shark Gone Bad seven-year-old gelding extended his win streak to nine with the victory.
Despite his assignment to the outside post, Shark Week wasted little time in grabbing the front position. He went coast-to-coast through marks in :27.2, :56 and 1:25.2 while maintaining a 1-1/2-length advantage. Turning for home, Shark Week drifted to the win by two lengths in 1:53.3. General Custard (David Kelly) finished second with Matts A Mystician (Nathan Sobey) third.
Shark Week is a winner of $432,725 with a record of 51-8-12 in 86 starts. He is owned by Lorne Duffield and Rod Hennessy. The heavily backed favourite returned $2.10 to win.
A field of five fillies and mares went postward in the $12,500 Distaff Preferred with Outlaw Sharktastic pocketing the win.
Trainer Nathan Sobey was in the bike of Outlaw Sharktastic as she left from post four. Bettors' choice, assigned post five in the field, Stash The Cookies (Dave Kelly) chased the car all the way to the top of the field and she controlled the timer through marks in :27.4, :56.1 and 1:25.4. Outlaw Sharktastic kept on the heels of the favourite before making her move in deep stretch and going on to win by 2-1/4 lengths in 1:54.3. Stash The Cookies had to settle for second and Goodbye Ceia Later (Phil Giesbrecht) completed the ticket for show.
Outlaw Sharktastic won her first race of 2025 in two starts and her 17th career race from 116 starts. A winner of $214,711 in her lifetime, the Smart Shark-Outlaw Alleyesonme seven-year-old mare is owned by Nathan Sobey, Glenda Winkleman and Glenn Pinel. She paid $5.40 for the win.
Mathew Howlett posted a training triple on the Wednesday evening card as he swept the early double with Baby Limbo ($3.40) and Mcwilly ($2.10) before returning with a win in the fifth race with Singing Ramona ($6.90). All three were piloted to victory by Phil Giesbrecht.
