Will Gov. Christie Sign Racing Bill?

Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey president Tom Luchento has commented on whether Governor Chris Christie will sign an Assembly and Senate-backed bill which would see $30 million redirected from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority to

the horse racing industry.

An article by Dave Little in the New York Daily News quotes Luchento saying that he doesn't think Atlantic City enjoyed relinquishing the funds, which will be dispersed over a three-period. The bill passed the Assembly and Senate with much support earlier this week.

Luchento was quoted as saying, "The school of thought on both sides of the aisle is that the casinos (signed off) on the money. I'm sure they didn't like it, but they said that's part of doing business."

In regard to whether he thinks Gov. Christie will sign the legislation, Luchento said, "I'm optimistic that he's going to sign it, but we have been told in the past that he wouldn't (sign similar measures), but things change."

Here's hoping that if that bill does get signed, the NJSOA will have the good sense and foresight to use some of those dollars to perpetuate and improve the racing product rather than just split it up among themselves via increased purses, which I'm afraid is what it sounds like from here.
