First out of the gate for the 2019 Heart of Harness Racing Calendar is this lovely winter image of Knockknockwhosthere at Whispering Willow Acres in Acme, Alta., taken by one of our regular calendar contributors, Evelyn Sabraw.
“The photo was taken at our place (Whispering Willow Acres) and the horse in the photo is our yearling Sadie (Knocknockwhosthere),” explained Sabraw. “It was a nice snowy day and she was waiting by the fence for some attention. She’s an incredibly personable filly and never more than a step away from people.”
As for her formal photography training, Sabraw took some workshops in 2016, but considers her camera work to be more of a hobby and takes pleasure in taking photos of her greatest passion, the horses.
“I have been the lucky winner of a few photo contests over the past couple of years and there is currently an exhibition of some of my photos in Drumheller, but I’m not ‘advertising’ my photography much. I love doing it as a hobby.”
To pursue her love of horses, Evelyn and her husband Marc founded R3 in 2003, an organization that rescue, rehabilitate and rehome horses. While it was a feel-good endeavour for over 10 years, Marc and Evelyn have closed the doors and decided to focus on their band of 12 Standardbreds.
The couple currently has four mares confirmed in foal and two yearlings in training, which includes Knockknockwhosthere (pictured above). Along with her crew of Standardbreds, Evelyn also has two miniature horses, Sambucca and Ringo, and the best of them all is her donkey, Slurpee.
When we asked Evelyn what she is looking forward to in 2019, she explained, “Definitely the birth of the four babies and hopefully seeing Ripley (Rip It Up) and Sadie (Knocknockwhosthere) racing!”
